Kansas Delegation Reacts to Defense Budget

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Members of the Kansas congressional delegation have mixed reviews of the proposed defense budget by Secretary Robert Gates.

Sen. Pat Roberts said Monday that the Pentagon's intentions to reopen a contract for new air refueling tankers was good news for the Air Force and Kansas. McConnell Air Force Base is the largest tanker base in the country.

Boeing Co. is expected to compete for the contract and if awarded the company would complete work on the aircraft at its Wichita plant.

However, Roberts expressed concerns that an airborne laser program, which also has ties to the Wichita plant, is being scaled back. The Republican said the weekend missile test by North Korea suggests the United States should continue the laser's development.
