JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says federal stimulus funds will repair and upgrade dams in 11 states, including one in eastern Kansas.

The federal government will pay $1.1 million to repair the Switzler Creek 7 dam in Osage County. Local officials will pay about 35 percent of the total cost, or $600,000.

Vilsack said many of the selected dams are reaching the end of their useful life.

The federal program announced Monday would spend $45 million to repair dams in 11 states. Vilsack says the construction will both repair dams and upgrade safety levels to comply with new development that has occurred downstream.
