EL DORADO, Kan. (AP) _ An El Dorado women has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and nearly $1,000 in fines for shooting her neighbor's dog last May after it trespassed on her property.

A Butler County jury had found Kristine Knutson guilty of cruelty to animals, but she filed a motion in March to set aside the verdict.

In sentencing Knutson on Monday, Judge John Sanders said that the law allows ranchers to protect their livestock and have to be able to dispose of animals endangering their animals. But he noted that Knutson did not testify that the dog was threatening her or her animals at the time.

He said the case has raised a lot of discussion in the public and online, but says that did not make any difference to him.
