TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ With the state unemployment rate at 6.2 percent, Kansas officials are searching other states to fill thousands of job vacancies inside state lines.

The Kansas Department of Commerce says its representatives are planning to attend a job fair in Omaha, Neb., next week. Spokesman Joe Monaco said crossing state lines to recruit for jobs in Kansas is a common practice.

Monaco said there are at least 22,000 positions available in Kansas, including 12,000 posted online in the last 15 days. The jobless rate in some western Kansas counties is as low as 2 percent, prompting employers in that area to seek state help.

Kansas is planning for 400 high-tech jobs at the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility to be built in Manhattan and 300 for a state casino in Dodge City. Another 1,000 construction workers will be needed for each project.
