The 70-year-old co-owner of a Hutchinson cemetery is charged with stealing more than $800,000 from two trust funds set up for maintenance on burial plots.
Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder said Sharon
McDonough was arrested late Thursday and charged with 16 counts of
theft. Schroeder said McDonough, the co-owner of Fairlawn Burial
Park, posted a $50,000 bond Thursday night.
The trusts supported maintenance of 10,000 plots, both for
previous and future burials. An investigation was launched in 2005
after a routine state audit.
McDonough faces two counts of felony theft, misuse of a
maintenance fund, four counts of providing false information; four
perjury counts and five counts of refusal to comply with the
Cemetery Merchandise Act.
