Topeka City Council members gave the go-ahead for new vehicles and equipment for both the Topeka Police and Fire Departments Tuesday night.
Council members approved up to $300,000 for each agency.
Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says the money will allow TPD to purchase about a dozen new vehicles and outfit them with equipment. He says those vehicles will replace older cars currently on the streets.
Miller says he expects the cars to be in action later this year. He says the department needs about 20 new vehicles a year, but a dozen is a good start.
Talks on combining the City of Topeka's and Shawnee County's Parks and Recreation Departments will wait for another day.
Council members voted to defer those talks until all members were present and could take part. Lana Kennedy and Richard Harmon were absent from Tuesday's meeting.
