TOPEKA, Kan. -- Cover your ears but no need to take cover. That piercing siren is just a friendly reminder that Kansas weather offers no mercy during tornado season.

As part of the Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week, the annual statewide tornado drill sounded off today.

Tornado season is about to whip around, as March through July mark the busiest times. Last year 187 tornadoes touched down in Kansas and led to four deaths and nine injuries.

The National Weather Service, the Kansas Emergency Management Association and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management teamed up to organize the event.
