Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and legislative leaders will be in Washington D.C. this week to promote two research projects in the state.

They plan to lobby Congress to provide the $450 million needed to build the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan. Homeland Security has already chosen Kansas State as the site of the lab, but Congress hasn't designated the money yet.

Researchers at the facility would study dangerous plant and animal diseases. The group also will lobby to have the Kansas University Cancer Center designated as a National Cancer Center. That would increase research and treatment at the center.
