Farmers Eye Broadband in Stimulus Package

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas farmers are buzzing about what the
stimulus package might mean for broadband Internet access.

Farming advocates say the package's emphasis on expanding broadband access will help farmers work more efficiently and
connect growers who work far from the nearest town.

Broadband access by satellite is already available for isolated farmers. But the costs are often higher at a time when farmers can least afford it.

Farmers say broadband access helps them keep up with weather forecasts, market prices and other valuable information.

Advocates liken broadband's potential to the New Deal, when then-president Franklin Roosevelt gambled that supplying isolated farmsteads with inexpensive power would modernize agriculture and
stir the rural economy.
