Budget plans are approved to start the first phase of reconstruction to the Willard Bridge west of Topeka. Shawnee County commissioners all voted to approve the $150,000 budget to start the preliminary design for the bridge.
Shawnee County Public Works director Tom Vlach says the goal is to replace the 54-year-old bridge. Vlach says now even larger vehicles cross the bridge than they did back then. He says there is no danger to those motorists though.
County leaders also approved the County Counselor's Office taking action on receiving more than three million dollars in fuel tax revenue from the state. The office plans to file a claim with the state or litigation against it.
Commissioners also agreed to allow other counties to take part under the representation of Shawnee County. Those counties would have to reimburse Shawnee County later.
