TOPEKA, Kan.-- A Kansas man is recovering from injuries inflicted by a lion at an animal refuge in Western Kansas.

Authorities say Brad Buchanan was staying at a hotel near the refuge and made his way to the lion's cage. The lion's owner Jeffrey Harsh found Buchanan with his right arm over the top of a gate on the cage. The lion had grabbed his arm.

Harsh beat the lion with a steel pipe to free the man.

Buchanan was first taken to a Colby hospital and then transferred to Denver for more surgery.
