WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Wichita hospital is ending the only heart
transplant program in Kansas.

Via Christi Regional Medical Center says its program falls short in the volume requirements set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The hospital said Tuesday that it was voluntarily withdrawing its heart transplant and ventricular assist device program from Medicare participation.

It says it will stop taking candidates for the program and will help those already on the waiting list transfer their care to other programs.

The next nearest heart transplant program is in Kansas City, Mo.

Hospitals in Denver, Omaha and Oklahoma City also have heart transplant programs.
