Tax season is in full swing. Now is the time to start thinking about filing your taxes to avoid waiting until the last minute. Many people will choose to have someone help them file their taxes this year and choosing the right person can be difficult. There are some easy tips to help you during the selection process.
Check the credentials of the person you are considering. Find out how long they have been in business and do not be afraid to ask for references.
Tony Scott is the Executive Director of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He recommends using a CPA to file your taxes because they have to pass several state requirements in order to be certified.
"The Secretary of Revenue regularly meets with our members, as do the IRS stakeholder advocates," said Scott. He suggests asking friends or members of your church who they use to help you find help.
"I would try to interview that person just like you would a doctor or a financial planner. Ideally, if you can find two or three that you got a good recommendation from and then go and visit with them and ask them what they do because there is a wide variety of services provided," said Jim Hanna, a Financial Planner with Ameriprise.
