LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) _ A Wichita State University student has won the annual trans-Atlantic pancake race, breaking the all-time record.

The 60th Pancake Day Race was staged in the western Kansas town of Liberal and in Olney, England, on Tuesday.

Twenty-two-year-old Tasha Gallegos of Liberal won the Kansas
race with a time of 57.5 seconds. Jane Hughes won the Olney race in
1 minute, 2 seconds.

The winning time beat the previous record which came in 2001, when Lisa Spillman of Liberal ran the course in 58.1 seconds.

Also among those running in Olney Tuesday was Jessica Wallace, from a city near Liberal. She says her sister-in-law. Nancy Klutchka, is the official photographer for the Liberal race and suggested Jessica contact Olney about being an honorary runner since she's living in England right now.

According to legend, the Olney race started in 1445, when a harried housewife arrived at church still clutching her frying pan with a pancake in it.

Liberal challenged Olney in 1950 after seeing photos of the race in a magazine.
