HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) _ Charges have been filed against a man
accused of taking five people hostage during a standoff at a
Hutchinson law firm.
The Hutchinson News is reporting that 31-year-old Nathan Cunningham of Hutchinson appeared Friday in Reno County District Court on numerous counts, including kidnapping. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
His attorney, Janis Knox, says Cunningham went to the law office of David Holmes around lunchtime Thursday with plans to kill himself in front of his estranged wife, who works in the office. Court documents say she had filed for a restraining order Wednesday.
The five hostages, including Holmes and his office staff, were released unhurt within an hour. Police said Cunningham emerged from the building at 7:10 p.m. after officers fired tear gas into the office.
Knox is requesting a mental evaluation for Cunningham.
