TOPEKA, Kan. -- Local students turned Valentine's Day into a volunteer day to raise money for a classmate in need.

A handful of students at Washburn Rural Middle School passed out valentine carnations to raise money for Jessica Seidel. The 12-year-old Topekan is undergoing chemotherapy and needs a bone marrow transplant.

Classmate Taylor Gnagi organized the Valentine flower sale to raise money for her medical fees. With the help of Alice Bertels and the school's community service group, Gnagi sold flowers at lunch for ten days.

Today, she delivered the carnations before school closed for the remainder of the week. In total, they sold about 450 flowers for $2 each.

Tomorrow there will be a Valentine Blood Drive in honor of Jessica in the gymnasium of Jay Shideler Elementary from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each donor receives pizza and a t-shirt.

To sign up, call Susan Raby at 339-4600.
