Schmitz said counselors were available for students at school Tuesday to help them cope with the loss of Corey Davis, 16, of Netawaka.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Davis was killed around 6:15 p.m. Monday at the intersection of US-75 and 110th Street, Powhattan. Troopers said Davis pulled out from a stop sign to cross US-75 and was hit by an oncoming semi travelling north on US-75.
Davis' Dodge Ram pickup overturned across US-75 and he was ejected onto the east shoulder of the highway. The semi, driven by Donald Clouse, 36, overturned onto its side across both lanes of the highway, causing it to be shut down until everything was cleared about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Clouse was taken to Horton Hospital. Davis died at the scene.
Davis was a sophomore at Wetmore High School. Principal Schmitz said after a short assembly Tuesday morning, counselors were made availabe for students who needed to talk to someone about the accident.
Schmitz said the atmosphere around school was quiet and subdued Tuesday. "Some of the students are taking it very hard. We're working together to get through the situation," he said.
Davis was active in youth group and in the KAYS club, a service organization, at school.
"He was a wonderful young man," Schmitz said. "I saw him everyday in the hallway: a great friend, a good sense of humor. The students got along very well with Corey."
Davis was also an outdoorsman. "Corey loved to hunt and ride his four-wheeler," Schmitz said, "and I remember seeing pictures of when they'd harvested a deer at deer season. They were so excited at what they'd accomplished."
Even though he attended school in Wetmore, Davis lived in Netawaka. Schmitz said there are just 11 students in Davis' class.
"It will definitely affect everyone," Schmitz said. He's already received phone calls from community members offering their support. "They are really concerned and wanting to pull together, support the family."
"Everyone's going to miss Corey," Schmitz said. "Our staff, our students, the community... going to be greatly missed here at Wetmore."
