Kansas Prison to Close Earlier Than Planned

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A minimum-security state prison in northwest
Kansas will close three months earlier than planned.

Corrections Secretary Roger Werholtz said Monday the Stockton prison will close April 1 rather than June 30, when the current budget year ends. The move is expected to save $339,000.

State officials are trying to close a projected deficit of at least $186 million in the current budget.

Werholtz said that with 64 inmates, the prison about 40 miles north of Hays is only half-full. The Stockton inmates will be transferred to other prisons.
