Child Stuck in Home Several Days with Mom's Dead Body

MANHATTAN, Kan. - A two year old child was found critically ill in a Manhattan home, 3209 Valleydale Drive, Manhattan. Authorities say his mother had died several days before the child was found with her body.

Riley County detectives don't suspect foul play. They've identified the victim as Erin Yeager, 32, and the two year old as her son.

Lt. Kurt Moldrup said Yeager's estranged husband went to the home Saturday morning to pick up their son for visitation, but called police when he couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

Police found Erin's body in the house and her two year old son in and out of consciousness on the couch. He was life-flighted to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and treated for dehydration, malnutrition and severe diaper rash.

Lt. Moldrup said detectives checked on the boy's condition Monday morning. "The nurses said he's doing pretty well. In fact, they said that he's flirting with all the nurses so he must be livening back up," Moldrup said.

A neighbor said they didn't know Yeager well. They say she had just moved into the home about four months ago. Every now and then they did see her and her son playing in the yard.

Lt. Moldrup said her son is doing better at Children's Mercy.

Police are waiting on an autopsy to officially determine a cause of death, but say they didn't find anything suspicious about the way Yeager died.

It's not clear at this time whether Yeager had any medical conditions.
