Everyone is being encouraged to join the community in curling up with a classic!

The Topeka and Shawnee County library kicks off "The Big Read" Sunday, Feb. 1.

The book of choice this year is Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." The month-long event will feature discussion groups, presentations and a film festival all centered around the book.

Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Communications Director Diana Friend says the event is funded through a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This is the third Big Read grant Topeka has received, and the seventh community reading event it's held overall.

Friend says it is designed to encourage people to return to reading as a leisure time activity. She says people are busy and reading is declining, but a good book can give people a way to connect.

"The Big Read" kickoff is 1pm Sunday, Feb. 1, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th.

A complete list of Big Read events can be found at their web site.
