Officials: Syphilis Outbreak Hits Sedgwick County

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Sedgwick County Health Department says it is investigating a syphilis outbreak in Sedgwick County.

The county had 24 reported syphilis cases in 2008, compared with just three case the year before. Statewide, 53 syphilis cases were reported last year.

Sedgwick County health officials say they have identified and treated numerous people.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can kill, if it's not treated. Health officials say the time between exposure and symptoms may last 90 days. It can be treated with antibiotics.
