Kansas Pawn Shop Burning Since Saturday Night

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ A fire that gutted a Kansas City, Kan., building that once housed a well-known pawn shop is continues to burn, more than 36 hours after the blaze erupted.

The Kansas City Star reports that firefighters remain at the scene Monday, unable to get through debris to douse hot spots that have been flaring up at Sam's Loan Office building.

Assistant Chief Craig Duke the roof and walls caved in, trapping a lot of combustible materials in the rubble. No one was injured in the blaze.

The fire was reported at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, but firefighters were driven back when the roof collapsed.

The cause has not yet been determined.

The pawn shop was a downtown fixture for nearly 80 years before it closed several years ago.
