(Manhattan, KS)--The next president of Kansas State University will have the responsibility of running a major university during a major economic downturn.

The university interviewed the first candidate for the open position this week. Kirk Schulz is currently the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State University.

He said he will be a "cheerleader" for the college if selected, and will steer K-State through any economic troubles. He said he will remain optimistic, and Kansas State may have to be leaner, but it will be better.

He spoke at the student union, saying the campus needs to have a plan focused on what it should look like in 2025.
