Some fifth-graders shifted their learning from the chalkboard to the keyboard today.

Students from East Indianola Elementary School and Lyman Elementary joined together to create their new school chant with the help of composer Michael Abels.

The two schools will close at the end of this year, and the new Logan Elementary will open up to house both student bodies.

And the result of today's piano brainstorming session with a professional composer? A new Logan Lions fight song with some kick.

East Indianola Elementary School's principal, Kim Crooks, said the event provided an opportunity for students to interact before they combine schools.

Abels is a visiting composer with the Topeka Symphony. He also visited a local high school today.

"American Heritage" will include Abel's "Dance for Martin's Dream" on Saturday with matinee and evening shows.
