Shawnee County commissioners got to work Monday on a number of issues.

After electing Vic Miller their new chairperson, they awarded a contract to the second-lowest bidder to work on a portion of southwest Wanamaker road between 41st and 47th street.

Public Works Director Tom Vlach recommended Schmidtlein excavating over singer excavating, even though Schmidtlein came in $2,600 higher.

Vlach says Singers' late finishes on other county projects was the biggest reason for the decision. The commission also granted Del-monte Foods a real estate and improvements tax exemption for economic developments.
