TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Mississippi State University vice president is one of three finalists for the top job at Kansas State University.

He is Kirk Schulz, vice president for research and economic development at Mississippi State in Starkville. He's scheduled to visit the Kansas State campus in Manhattan on Jan. 15 and 16.

The Kansas Board of Regents announced Friday that Schulz was a finalist. But it declined to name the other two until later this month, when their campus visits are closer. One other finalist will visit Jan. 22 and 23, and the third one, Jan. 26 and 27.

President Jon Wefald has announced that he'll retire at the end of the current academic year, after 23 years.

The board expects to pick a new president in the next few months.
