Police Chief Sam Breshears says the city recorded 916 violent crimes in 2008, a 24.3 percent decrease compared with the previous year. The chief released the crime numbers to Wyandotte County's Unified Board of Commissioners on Thursday night.
Despite the drop though, the city saw its homicides increase to 33, up from 25 in 2007. But that number still is relatively low compared with other years this decade. There were 65 killings in 2001.
The city's violent crimes peaked in 1990, when there were 2,821 incidents. They remained above 2,000 through 1995.
Breshears says community policing and a crime analysis unit that identifies trends have helped in reducing violent crimes.
