The Republican was to be sworn in as one of Congress' freshman members when the new Congress convened Tuesday.
Jenkins ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda in November to take over as the congresswoman from the 2nd congressional district in eastern Kansas. She won that faceoff after defeating former Rep. Jim Ryun in the GOP primary.
Her victory was one of the bright spots for the GOP in November's elections, when Democrats increased their House majority.
Jenkins served two terms as state treasurer before making her congressional run. She is orginally from Holton, was a certified public accountant and also served in the Kansas state House and Senate.
