You won't see it right away, but the YWCA is helping keep you and your children safer. They are upgrading their pool drain covers to comply with a new safety law which took effect Friday.
The law aims to reduce deaths and injuries by making pools safer. The old drains are flat and have lines in them, while the new ones are dome-shaped and have holes.
Linda Deines of the Topeka YWCA says on the average, those old drain covers caused over 283 deaths a year, most of them children under age five.
The YWCA plans to reopen the pool with the new drains in place by Friday.
