Mom Gets Probation for Dumping Baby

MCPHERSON, Kan. (AP) _ A 19-year-old McPherson woman who left her 6-week-old daughter in a Dumpster in May and then told police the child was kidnapped is sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Deidre Harman also was sentenced to eight months of prison, but that's suspended as long as she complies with terms of probation. Assistant McPherson County Attorney Gary Price Jr. says continued health counseling is one of those terms.

Harman lost custody of the little girl, who was placed in state custody after police found her in a trash bin near Harman's home. The baby was found unharmed several hours after her mother reported her missing.

Harmon pleaded no-contest in October to child abandonment. Prosecutors dropped a charge of child endangerment as part of the plea deal.
