A 57-year-old Hays man pleads guilty to building a pipe bomb that was attached to a truck owned by a man dating his ex-girlfriend.

Acting U.S. Attorney Marietta Parker says Donald E. Parsons pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of making a destructive device. Lawrence police were called May 16, 2007, by a man who said he
found a pipe bomb hanging from the bottom of his truck.

In the plea, Parsons said the intended victim was dating his ex-girlfriend and had moved in with her. Investigators found tools used to construct the bomb at the home of Parsons' family in Ellis County. They also found Internet searches for bomb building and recovered footage from Westlake Hardware in Hays of Parsons buying the materials.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 9.
