TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A monthly payment to Kansas' 297 public school districts from the state was delayed this month.

The payment of $220 million split among the public school districts was delayed four days this week.

Schools got 75 percent of the funds yesterday.

The rest will be paid next week.

School officials are viewing it as a sign that ``hard times are here.''

It's not unusual for the monthly payments to be delayed but it is infrequent and usually occurs when state revenues fall.

Schools say the delay won't hurt them, but leaves uncertainty for upcoming months.

The Kansas Legislative Research Department has projected that the state would end the current fiscal year on June 30 with a $141 million budget deficit.
