Scammers are using familiar names to put a new twist on an old con.
Attorney General Steve Six warns people are being told they've won a well-known sweepstakes like Reader's Digest or Publishers Clearinghouse. However, they're told to send money to pay clearance or processing fees.
Six says a legitimate sweepstakes would not require paying an advance fee.
Another similar type of scam tells a person they have won a foreign lottery, but that certain fees must be paid before the check can be issued. Consumers are reminded that the only lottery that is legal in Kansas is the Kansas State Lottery.
Anyone who believes they have received a fraudulent price check should contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1(800)432-2310.
