Hugoton Voters Nix Sunday Alcohol Sales

HUGOTON, Kan. (AP) _ Residents of the southwest Kansas town of Hugoton turn thumbs down to alcohol sales on Sundays and most holidays.

Voters on Monday rejected a measure to allow the sales, 291-178. Residents petitioned for a vote after the city council in August approved Sunday sales of alcohol at convenience stores and liquor stores in the town of 3,400.

Opponents of Sunday sales had said they weren't out to hurt businesses that the decision would impact, but were standing up for what they believe in.

Had the measure passed, alcohol sales would have been allowed on all Sundays except Easter and Christmas, and on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
