Public Invited to Offer Comments About Topeka Police Department

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive December 6, 2008, to examine all aspects of the Topeka Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Chief Miller announced Monday.

This team of assessors will verify that the Topeka Police Department has voluntarily maintained compliance with the Commission’s State-of-the-art Standards of Law Enforcement—a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. The Topeka Police Department was first accredited in 2000.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session December 8, 2008 at 7:00 PM. The session will be conducted in the Topeka Police Department Training Academy located at 320 S. Kansas Avenue, Suite 100.

If anyone would like to comment at the public information session, but cannot attend in person, they may call 368-9001 on December 8, 2008 between the hours of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Or they may write to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2201.

All comments (appearance, telephone, or written) must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. Comments made at the Public Information session and telephone comments will be limited to 10 minutes. A copy of the standards will be available for review at the Law Enforcement Center. Local contact is CPT Jerry Stanley at 368-9277.

The Topeka Police Department has to comply with 460 standards in order to gain accredited status, Chief Miller said. Chief Miller also comments “The Topeka community deserves a modern and efficient police department that operates to the highest standards available. The Topeka Police Department has met the high standards set by CALEA. Compliance with CALEA standards is good for the community and for the personnel working for the Topeka Police Department.”

Diana Brey, the Police Department Accreditation Manager, said the Topeka Police Department was originally inspected in 2000. It was reaccredited in 2003 and 2005. It has been completing annual reports to CALEA each year for the past 8 years. This will be the Department’s fourth on site inspection by CALEA.

The assessors are Retired CPT Thomas Anderson, Anoka, MN; LT Linda Johnson, Bartow, FL; CPT Humberto Cardounel, Richmond, VA. GA. Once the assessors have completed their review of the agency, they will report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted continued accredited status.
