LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ The woman whose speeding pickup truck struck and killed two highway workers near Lawrence has been sentenced to 26 years in prison.
In Wednesday's sentencing of Ramona Morgan, Douglas County District Court Judge Paula Martin said Morgan's actions "give new meaning to the word reckless.'' At one point, Martin ordered Morgan to stop talking with her attorney while victims' families made statements to the court.
The 49-year-old Morgan was convicted in September of two counts of reckless second-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery.
Kansas Department of Transportation worker Tyrone Korte of Seneca and contractor's employee Rolland Griffith of El Dorado died when they were struck Sept. 11, 2007, in a work zone on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence.
A defiant Morgan insisted she's innocent, claiming she was "set up.''
