TOPEKA, Kan. - According to a survey from Consumer Reports Health, only 52% of adults say they will get a flu shot this year. Some cited reasons such as not liking shots or claiming they do not get sick. However, doctors say getting the flu could be life threatening.

"The flu can have terrible complications and people die from the flu every year<" Dr. Betsy Johns of Tallgrass Immediate Care, said. "And if you develop pneumonia or some complicating factor, flu can be a killer."

Getting the vaccine does not only protect yourself.

"We put our co-workers at risk, and we put our children at risk and we put our grandparents at risk if we bring the flu to other people," Dr. Johns said.

Fireman Jeffery Reynolds gets his flu shot every year. Wednesday, his 7-year-old son, Ryan, also came in for the vaccine.

"If, for instance, I don't get the flu, but I'm carrying it, I can transfer it to other people at work," Jeffery Reynolds said. "I can also transfer it to patients that I may see at my job. I can also bring it home and transfer it to my family."

"Well, it doesn't hurt that much and it doesn't seem so scary when you think about it," Ryan Reynolds said.

There are still places to get a flu shot in the Topeka area. Tallgrass will have one final day of their flu shot clinic from 3 until 7 p.m. Thursday. Stormont-Vail will offer flu shots from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday until November 20th.
