Free Fair Housing Workshop Offered

TOPEKA, Kan. - Learn about fair housing practices and laws at a free three-hour workshop from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, at the Holliday Building, 620 SE Madison Ave., Topeka, in the first floor conference room.

Sponsored by the City of Topeka’s Human Relations Commission, Fair Housing Assistance Program, the workshop will explain Federal and Local Fair Housing law, and will include a discussion of housing discrimination investigations from the experts who conduct them. Fair housing practices apply to the sales and rentals of dwellings.

The HRC has a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to conduct investigations of allegations of discrimination in housing within the city limits of Topeka, and to perform outreach and education in regards to the Fair Housing Act. It is illegal for housing providers to discriminate against tenants, rental applicants or customers on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status.

Property managers/owners, real estate agents, housing providers, social service providers and members of the public are invited to attend.

Registration by Friday, November 28 is recommended, as space is limited. Call 368-3606 (for Kansas Relay Service dial 7-1-1) or send your name, address and phone number to hrc@topeka.org. Requests for reasonable accommodations in compliance with the ADA may be made at the time of registration.
