MERIDEN, Kansas - The owners of a Jefferson County ranch from
where more than 50 horses briefly disappeared this week say they
moved the horses for their own safety.

Jennifer Roberts is a spokeswoman for the Becker Family
Foundation. She tells the Topeka Capital-Journal that the woman
leasing the ranch was behind on $50,000 in payments.

She also says the Beckers received complaints that the animals
weren't being cared for and implemented a provision allowing the
animals to be moved for their own well-being.

Tammy Blase admits she was behind on payments. But she says she
didn't receive any warning before the horses disappeared from the
property near Meriden Tuesday.

They were found Wednesday night at Wheeler Dairy north of Lawrence.
