TOPEKA, Kan. - The Topeka Residence Inn by Marriott, Fairfield Inn by Marriott, and The Topeka Comfort Inn by Choice are participating in the "Room in the Inn" program, which offers free hotel rooms to those visiting loved ones in area hospitals, nursing homes and treatment centers on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve.
Tharaldson Lodging Company operates the three inns. Tharaldson began the "Room in the Inn" program in 1988.
By offering free rooms to those in need, the company said it hopes to make it a little easier for families to get together during the holidays.
The "Room in the Inn" program resulted from incidents that occurred to the Tharaldson/Aamold family. Many years ago, while visiting relatives over Christmas, their nine-month-old son became very sick. He was hospitalized for several days.
The family spent that holiday alone in a hospital room awaiting their son's recovery. In the years to follow, Linda Aamold Tharaldson's father passed away due to cancer at Thanksgiving time and her brother was killed in a car accident just days before Christmas.
Every one of the more than 350 hotels managed by Tharaldson Lodging Companies offers free rooms under the program.
