KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ The Kansas City Star has endorsed Democratic challenger Jim Slattery in the Senate race in Kansas.
The Star's editorial Thursday noted that it supported Republican Sen. Pat Roberts in his 1996 and 2002 races.
But The Star said the senator made "serious mistakes'' by tying himself too closely to President Bush.
The newspaper said Slattery offers "forward-looking thinking'' on the economy, health care and national security.
The Star also criticized Roberts' tenure as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee as being marked by "excessive partisan bickering.''
The newspaper concluded: "Jim Slattery presents a better choice for Kansas voters who want to see less partisanship and better judgment in Washington.''
