TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas voters have begun casting their ballots for the Nov. 4 election, and lines were long at some polling places.

Advance voting started Tuesday and ends at noon Nov. 3, the day before Election Day. Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh said election officials in every Kansas county were swamped with new voter registrations.

Thornburgh said that while advance votes made up less than 20 percent of ballots cast in past elections, that number could rise above 30 percent this year. He said Sedgwick County election officials believe that almost 50 of the county's voting will be in advance.

Applications for advance voting may be obtained at county election offices.
