ST. LOUIS (AP) The National Park Service favors a plan that would allow for changes to the look of the Gateway Arch grounds.
Park officials say if the preferred alternative is approved, a design competition would be held to generate ideas to revitalize the grounds of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Any changes would have to fit with the property's status as a historical landmark.
There's no word yet on whether the final plan would support adding a new cultural attraction on the grounds, as a group of community leaders have proposed.
Plans call for doing a full analysis of the alternatives and releasing a draft plan next year. After that public comment would be taken before a decision is made on how to proceed.
