CITY HALL - Topeka City Court judges now have the authority to add the costs of criminal behavior to the defendant's tab. Topeka Council members voted 7-1 (John Alcala voting no..) to approve giving the judges discretion to order repayment of court appointed lawyers fees, warrant fees, and other miscellaneous costs and expenses against people charged and convicted in City Court. Other fees which could be added at the judge's discretion include the cost of their incarceration, which averages about $75 a day.
In other action, council members made an 8-0 decision to approve a demolition permit request for Steve Stutzman. His request covers demolition on property located at 324 SW Taylor Street in Topeka, within 500 feet of the historic Sumner School building. The City Council agreed with city legal and department staffers that were no feasible alternatives available to them, other than clearing the property.
