Coal Train Kills Man in Merriam

MERRIAM, Kan. (AP) _ Authorities are investigation the death of a man who was struck by a train in the Kansas City suburb of Merriam, Kan.

Police said the man was walking on railroad tracks at about 8 p.m. Sunday when a coal train traveling 20 to 25 miles per hour struck him from behind. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has not been identified.

Police said the man did not react to the train's whistle. Merriam police Col. Troy Duvanel said alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
