WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A Kansas couple accused of running a pill mill are challenging prosecutors' expert witnesses.
Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda Schneider, are charged in a 34-count indictment with directly causing four deaths and contributing to 21 others. The indictment links their Haysville clinic to 58 accidental overdose deaths.
Their attorneys argue in court documents filed late Friday that Stephen Schneider's patients had life-threatening diseases. They claim nothing can determine whether drug overdoses killed the patients when autopsies note multiple possible causes of deaths.
The defense also is questioning laboratory results, saying findings in some autopsies are scientifically impossible or improbable.
They are seeking a hearing to determine if much of the expert testimony should be admissible at trial.
