TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Thursday at approximately 11:08 am, a grass fire was reported near the city of Auburn. A pasture of land stretching from 11th St. to 14th St. on the west edge of town was burning when emergency crews arrived. Approximately 10 acres of pasture was either burnt or threatened as result of the fire. Fire crews were able to contain the fire and were preparing to leave the area around 1:30 pm. It is unknown at this time if the fire was accidental or the result of an illegal burn.
More than 30 emergency personnel from the Auburn, Dover, Mission and Shawnee Heights Township Fire Departments, as well as, Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority Fire Dept. responded to the call.
Sheriff’s Deputies and neighborhood residents went door-to-door attempting to notify persons in the area of the incident. Approximately 10 residences in the Auburn area were threatened by the potential spreading of the fire but no structures were reportedly damaged and no injuries had been reported. American Medical Response (AMR) personnel were called to stand-by near the area for precautionary measures.
The Auburn Fire Dept. will monitor the situation.
