LITTLE RIVER, Kan. (AP) _ A Little River High School student who underwent an emergency liver transplant last week has died.
Little River school officials say 16-year-old Matthew Waters died Sunday at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He had undergone a liver transplant last Friday, after becoming ill on Sept. 21.
Little River football coach Shane Cordell says Waters' liver transplant was successful, but there was too much pressure on Waters' brain.
Waters was a sophomore. He was starting quarterback and a linebacker on the Little River team.
Doctors have not determined a cause of his illness, but say it was not related to any trauma from football.
