Layoffs at Tyson Foods translated into a drop in students for the Emporia school district.

KVOE radio reports the district's school board got the numbers Wednesday. Earlier, the district said it's first-day headcount saw a nearly five-percent decline in enrollment.

That's not as bad as it could have been, the district estimated nearly 20 percent of its students had at least one parent or guardian working at Tyson when it cut 1500 jobs back in January.

The state already agreed to limit any funding cut for the district this year to a maximum two percent.
