A mayoral appointment to the planning commission got a thumbs-down from a split Topeka City Council Tuesday night.
Council members approved a resolution rejecting Carol Torrence's appointment to the board. The vote was 5-4.
Under a new state law, the Concil had 45 days to make a specific finding by resolution that a person is unqualified or unfit to hold the position to which he or she has been appointed. The reason given for Torrence's rejection was that she had previously publicly voiced opposition to growth and development "which conflict with those of a majority of the City Council." Torrence has spoken out againsta proposed development at SW 53rd and Wanamaker.
Mayor Bill Bunten called the vote a sad day for the Council.
